Job Description:
How do individual somatic cells collaborate to construct the multicellular body from organs of defined size and shape? This fundamental question has not been addressed by studies of unicellular organisms like yeast and E. coli, and does not seem to be approachable using cultured cells, which typically do not assemble into recognizable organs, yet it is relevant to diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration and processes such as liver reeneration. Instead, studies of growth and morphogenesis require intact animals. Our work uses the genetically pliable fruitfly
Drosophila melanogaster
to study the regulation of tissue and organ growth, and the progression from multipotent progenitors to terminally differentiated cells, in whole animals at the molecular level.
The Research Technician will perform diverse laboratory experiments in genetic studies of cell competition and growth control Responsibilities also include microscopy, tissue preparation, antibody labeling, confocal microscopy, breeding and mutagenesis of fruit flies, and other related duties as assigned. This individual should have sufficient background to appreciate the goal of our project and a strong desire to help us achieve it.
BA or BS in related science or equivalent skills and experience plus 0 to 2 years of experience required.
Prior work with Drosophila and experience in Genetics or Molecular Genetics laboratory preferred.
